Some mornings on the farm start quietly, with the promise of another beautiful day ahead, but others begin with a little extra excitement—and a touch of worry. One early Sunday morning, we were greeted with both when Maggie, our favorite cow, began to give birth.
Maggie has always been a cherished member of our farm family. She’s a gentle soul with a knack for stealing hearts, as a bucket calf. But she was way too young to calf by herself. Farmer Eric had gone out early to check the cattle when he came back to the find Maggie laying on her side.
After checking her closely, we made the decision to load her into the trailer and head to the vet. The crisp morning air added a sense of urgency as we drove, hoping everything would turn out all right for Maggie and her unborn calf.
At the clinic, the vet confirmed what we suspected—the calf may be too big for Maggie to birth without assistance. With steady hands and the help of a calf puller, the vet worked carefully to deliver the baby. Minutes later, the barn was filled with the soft bleating of a healthy little calf—a beautiful, sturdy heifer with Maggie’s kind eyes.
Seeing Maggie turn to lick her newborn and hearing the first little moo from the calf was a moment of pure relief and joy. Maggie, the new devoted mother, immediately began nuzzling her baby, and within minutes, the calf was trying to stand on her wobbly legs—a testament to her strength and determination.
That morning reminded us of the unpredictable nature of farm life—the challenges, the teamwork, and the miracles that make it all worthwhile. Maggie and her calf are now doing wonderfully, and watching them together in the pasture fills our hearts with gratitude.
Mornings like that Sunday are a reminder of why we love this life. It’s not always easy, but the rewards—a healthy calf, a resilient mother, and the privilege of witnessing life’s beginnings—make it all worth it.
Here’s to Maggie, her new calf, and all the unexpected adventures that keep life on the farm so full of heart and wonder.
