Did you know that starting May 7, 2025, anyone aged 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to fly domestically within the United States? This new requirement, part of the REAL ID Act, aims to enhance security across the country—but what does it mean for you? Let’s break it down!

What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets stricter federal security standards established by the REAL ID Act of 2005. These standards were developed in response to the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations to improve the reliability of ID documents used for federal purposes.

You can recognize a REAL ID by the star symbol located in the upper portion of the card. If your driver’s license doesn’t have this star, it’s not REAL ID compliant.

When Do You Need a REAL ID?

Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID or an alternative form of acceptable identification, such as:

• A valid passport

• A U.S. military ID

• A DHS Trusted Traveler card (like Global Entry)

These IDs will be required for:

1. Boarding domestic flights within the United States.

2. Accessing federal facilities, including military bases and some courthouses.

How Do You Get a REAL ID?

To upgrade to a REAL ID, you’ll need to visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in person. Be sure to bring the necessary documents to verify your identity, which usually include:

Proof of Identity: A valid passport, birth certificate, or other official document.

Proof of Social Security Number: Your Social Security card, W-2 form, or pay stub with your SSN.

Proof of Residency: Two documents, such as utility bills, rental agreements, or bank statements, showing your address.

Requirements may vary slightly by state, so it’s a good idea to check your local DMV’s website before you go.

Who Doesn’t Need a REAL ID?

If you don’t plan to fly domestically or access federal facilities, you may not need a REAL ID. However, having one can make life easier, as it’s becoming a widely accepted form of identification.

What Happens if You Don’t Have a REAL ID by the Deadline?

After May 7, 2025, if you show up at the airport without a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative, you won’t be allowed through security to board your flight.

Plan Ahead

The deadline may seem far away, but don’t wait until the last minute. DMVs often experience long wait times closer to major deadlines. Avoid the rush and upgrade to a REAL ID early so you’re ready to fly without hassle.

Your Travel Future Simplified

Whether you’re traveling for business or leisure, ensuring you have a REAL ID is one less thing to worry about. With your compliant license in hand, you’ll be ready to explore all the incredible destinations the United States has to offer.
